Roseate Spoonbill
Is it a flamingo…?
After finding several pink feathers and being convinced that we have flamingos on Coco Beach, we spotted the Roseate Spoonbill along the riverside of the Rio Palo Blanco, next to Coco Beach.
The Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) is a striking and fascinating bird found in Panama and other parts of the Americas. It is easily recognizable due to its distinctive pink plumage and long, flat, spoon-shaped bill. Adults have a bright pink coloration, which can range from pale pink to bright magenta, especially on their wings and tail feathers. They also have a white neck and upper body.
The Roseate Spoonbill is a captivating species that adds a splash of color to Panama’s diverse avian landscape. Its presence is a reminder of the importance of wetland conservation for the continued survival of such unique and beautiful creatures.
